animals minds Flashcards
to have roaring success
argument from induction for other minds
in my own case can see that behaviours correlate to mental states. so can assume others are having same mental states when showing these behaviours.
problem with induction argument
im a student called Ned so all student must be called Ned. shows though that perhaps hard to justify animals having minds just as much as humans.
evidential argument 3
ev arg. - good justification of minds difficult to obtain. argument uses morgan canon - clever hans. hard to suggest animals have minds.
Monkeys
monkeys doing maths - against morgans canon - suggests intelligence
Davidsons meta cognitive argument
to have belief, need concept of belief, to have concept have language. so animals dont have minds/beliefs
Insects having minds
LOOK and DECIDE what to eat. REMEMBER way home. CHOOSE where to live. Ants - stilts/stumps - still able to work out distance of home even after having legs altered.
Carruthers view of mindedness
to think is to have distinct beliefs and desires - not minded if don’t have innate states and learnt through conditioning.
Conclusion
do have evidence of minds
