Q

How do you increase the strength of the magnetic field

A

Increase the current

Put more turns on the coil

Use a soft iron core

Use stronger magnets

Q

How does an electromagnet work

A

When a current flows through the coils, a magnetic field is induced in the core.

Increasing the current or amount of turns increases the strength

Q

In Flemings left hand rule what do the finger represent

A

Thumb = motion/force

First finger = field (N,S)

Middle finger = current

Q

How does Fleming’s left hand rule work

A

When an electron over in a magnetic field it experiences a force. This makes the wire it is in move unless it is moving parallel to the field

Q

On a diagram how do you know wether the wire is coming into or out of the page

A

Into page = Circle with a cross in the middle (like lightbulb symbol)

Out of page = Circle with no cross

16
Q

How does a motor work

A

When a current flows in the coil a magnetic field is induced

This interacts with the permanent magnetic field producing a force

The force is up one one side of the coil and down on the other so the coil turns

Every half turn, the split ring commutator reverses the current which keeps it turning.

Without it, the coil would vibrate

17
Q

How does a loud speaker work

A

When an AC current flows in the coil, a magnetic field is induced around it.

This interacts with the permanent magnetic field producing a force

The force makes the coil vibrate

The coil makes the paper cone vibrate producing sound waves in the air
