  • minimum of 11 members, job is to examen issues in detail, including spending and government policy
  • currently 19 committees who gather information and present it to house of commons
  • government does not have to act upon information, can reject it after 60 days
  • recently health committee recommended tax on sugary drinks to reduce child obesity which was granted

  • half an hour debate at end of each day, MP’s can raise issues or concerns
  • poor attendance at this time and only select MP’s chosen to air their concerns
  • little media coverage

A
  • Backbench business committee considers and awards proposals for debates including e-petitions
  • no fixed time allocated meaning depends on time left over from other business finishing
  • Feb 2017 parliament debated on e-petition calling for Donald Trump to be prevented from making a state visit to UK was denied
