Chapter1 Cells Flashcards
What is the function of chloroplast
Absorbs light for photosynthesis
What is the function of the nucleus
Stores genetic material
What is the function of cytoplasm
Chemical reactions take place in the cytoplasm
What is the function of ribosomes
They are in the cytoplasm and carry out protein synthesis
What is the function of the cell wall
Provides support
What is the function of the cell membrane
Controls the movement of substances
What is the function of mitrochondria
For respiration, has large surface area with curved edges
What is the difference between a eukaryote and a prokaryote cell
Eukaryotes have a nucleus while prokaryotes don’t, also eukaryotes are larger then prokaryotes.
All animals and plants have eukaryotic cells while bacteria is a prokaryote
What do bacteria cells have
Cell wall Cell membrane Plasmid Single DNA loop Ribosomes Cytoplasm
What do fungi cells have
Cytoplasm Ribosome Mitochondria Nucleus Cell wall Cell membrane
What is the equation to find image size
Actual size * magnification
Is is eukaryotes or prokaryotes that end to be highly specialised
Eukaryotes
How are root hairs specialised for there job
Root hairs are long and then so they have a very large surface area and this allows them to take in a lot of water through osmosis
How is the xylem specialised for it’s job
It’s has a hollow tube allowing water to flow up and has small hairs pointing upwards to push all the water from the roots up to the leaves
How is the phloem specialised to its function
Phloem cells have seive plates that transports the sugar created by photosynthesis up and down the plant, unlike xylem, phloem can move there product up and down
