1 in 4 Canadians are directly affected by mental illness.

  • Depression (1-4)
  • Anxiety (panic, social, phobia, generalized, OCD, PTSD) (1-4)
  • Schizophrenia (1-100)
  • Bipolar Disorder (2-100)

Not everyone experiences a concern or diagnosis in the same way.

Some people may have mental health issues but may not have a mental illness.

Early Warning Signs of Mental Illness

A

Withdrawal

Depression, mood swings, higher anxiety

Physical changes (appetite, sleep, energy, body language)

Trouble concentrating and decision making

Changes in thinking, language, school/work

Schizophrenia basics

A

1-100 people.

Occurs in men, women, all social classes, and cultures equally.

Strikes between ages 15-30. Men affected earlier as estrogen is a protector for women. (often the time when people experiment with weed/THC and is a trigger

“The Great Disabler of Youth”.

Schizophrenia is NOT a split or multiple personality disorder.

Symptoms of schizophrenia

A
  • Hallucinations–can affect any or all 5 senses
  • Delusions–firm fixed false beliefs
  • Paranoia – suspicious thought and feelings
  • Thought disorder –fragmented disorganized thinking

Social withdrawal

  • Loss in drive and motivation
  • Diminished self-care
  • Decreased memory, ability to plan, and focus
  • Depression/anxiety, risk of suicide

A

Combination of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder or schizophrenia and depression.

Bipolar Disorder (Manic Depression

A

2 in 100 persons

Mania includes:

  • Increased mood (energy, self-esteem, speech)
  • Grandiose ideas / invincible / delusions, racing thoughts
  • Irritability
  • Restless, decreased need to sleep
  • Lack of inhibitions (sex, drugs/alcohol, spending)

Various types and can last days or weeks and even years in between episodes.
