what is a formative assessment

A

An assessment procedure conducted by educators during the learning process in order to provide feedback and modify teaching and learning activities going forward.
Typically involves qualitative rather than quantitative feedback.
Help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and target areas that need work

what is a summative assessment

A

An assessment which measures the outcome of an educational process.
Often require a set level of attainment or are required for progression.

What is a norm-referenced test

A

A Norm Referenced test is designed to compare and rank test takers in relation to one another.
Norm-referenced tests report whether test takers performed better or worse than a hypothetical average student based on sample data.
Results are relative to a norm e.g. IQ where the median IQ is 100 and peoples IQs are given relative to this standard.

A

For criterion-referenced tests performance is judged according to an expected level or standard that is not dependent on other test takers

What is reflection in medical education

A

Reflection is when one reflects on an action or event and analyses the positive and negative aspects of that event, the reasons for the event occuring in the way it did and ways in which learning from the event can be utilised in future situations.
