Q

Why do people disregard the climate refugee term?

A

Because it makes the people who will be affected by climate change seem not valuable in the efforts to relocate and assist them in adaptation. When in fact they are well informed and engaged in the climate change topic because they will be so affected. Also if we use the term ‘climate refugee’ then it makes migration seem as the only option for these communities but there are other strategies that can be put in place which would allow these populations to stay in their homes which is obviously the preferred option for ethical reasons

Q

What might be some barriers/problems with migration as an adaptation strategy and who outlined them?

A
  • Rural-urban migration will dominate due to resources scarcity in rural areas. Other migrant clusters will also result a similar strain on resources in those areas.
  • Migration from one place to another may not remove the risk as the destination may be just at threat from that risk they were escaping
  • Sovereignty issues regarding displaced populations
  • Migration might not be an available option for some people, or it may be the only option
    Black et al. (2011)
