what happens when relationships are broken?

A
  1. 1950s put child in nursery/orphanage when you had another child common practice
  2. movie
    a. for several weeks after returning home, John still showed extreme upset/refused mom’s comfort
    b. had severe temper tantrums
    c. any reminder of the nursery would make him incredibly upset
    d. many months later, he continued to be acutely anxious if he didn’t know where his mother was and to have outbursts of hostility against her
    e. even at age six, still seemed anxious sand unsure of mother’s love

A

b. Without the distraction of mother-infant interactions…but whenever he separated the infants from their mothers, they became highly distressed.
i. Harlow’s Hypothesis: if attachment to a mother was based on feeding, infants should prefer whichever mother gave them food.
ii. Conclusion: attachment is not all about food; contact comfort is more important.

  1. Attachment: an enduring emotional tie to a person, characterized by a tendency to seek and maintain closeness, especially during times of stress
  2. Function of attachment: security!
    a) Attachment figure acts as a “safe haven” providing a sense of safety
    b) Attachment figure acts as a “secure base” so that children can explore the world
