Introduction

A

In the early 17th century many people from Europe left their homelands and risked their lives on a dangerous voyage to arrive and settle down on the northeastern seaboard of the new world. Most of the settlers were of British, French as German origin. In the beginning they had to cope with many difficult situations, such as hunger and disease.

  • first permanent English settlement (in North America) was founded in Jamestown, Virginia -the ship Mayflower brought the Founding Fathers -many puritants who fled England —> religious persecution -settlers started growing tobacco, sugar cane, cotton & tea

  • 4th of July declaration of independence (from E) -“no taxation without representation” -Boston Tea Party •by destroying British tea (shipment) —> led to revolutionary war -triangular trade = is a term for the trade of goods between Europe, Africa &Native America —> slaves were needed

  • growing population on the east coast needed more space -bloody battles with native Americans ( they pushed off their land , had to defend themselves, were forced out by settlers)

  • to wage war - northern states have won -slavery was officially abolished -> reactionary people founded Ku-Klux-Klan = racist organisation promoting WASP-Ideal -abolition of slavey was called out but segregation prevailed - through MLK action —> segregation became illegal -racial problems until today

  • [vae victis] - after WW1 USA were victors with very little investment, compared to the European states -gained a lot of relative power - trade with weapons and supplies to the UK&F boosted US-economy

  • thing again after WW2 —> France , UK , Spain & Germany… lost theirs colonies -therefore USA obtained even more powerful - as superpower USA became the western global hegemon {set themselves up world police} - the communist eastern bloc collapsed, thus —> USA became sole global hegemon
