How do diuretics work?
Block Na reabsorption in the kidneys
Side effects of diuretics
Hypokalaemia (tired, arrhythmias)
Hyperglycaemia (diabetes)
Increased uric acid (gout)
Impotence
What are the 2 types of beta blocker? What’s the difference?
Cardioselective (only B1) non cardioselective (B1 + B2)
When are cardioselective BB used?
Angina
Hypertension
Heart failure
When are non-selective BBs used?
Thyrotoxicosis
Side effects of BBs
DO NOT use in asthma
Tiredness
Heart failure (gd long term, worse short term)
Cold peripheries
What are the 2 types of CCB?
Dihydropyridines (e.g. amlodipine)
Rate imiting CCB (e.g. verapamil)

How do alpha blockers work?
Block lpha receptors to cause vasodilation

postural hypotension
What do ACE inhibitors do?
Block conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II
When are ACE inhibitors good for the kidneys?
Diabetic nephropathy
When are ACE inhibitors bad for the kidneys?
Renal artery stenosis

Cough
Renal dysfunction
Angioneurotic oedema
In what group of patients should ACE inhibitors or ARBs not be used for HTN?
