1
Q

What are contour lines?

A

Join places same height above sea level.

Lines have height in metres written between or above them.

Q

Give 5 characteristics of contour lines.

A

Never stop in the middle of the map, either circular or run off.

Only touch each other on vertical slope. (Cliff or waterfall)

V-shape pointing up: valley

V-shape pointing down: spur

Lines may never cross

Q

What are conical mountains and give an example?

A

Oval circles with large oval shape in the centre to indicate flat top.
E.g: Omatako Hills near Otjiwarongo

Q

What are valleys?

A

Valleys are formed when rivers flow downwards. In Namibia there are many dry river beds because of the dry climate. Two rivers that flow next to each other usually have a area of higher land between the valleys.

Q

What should you remember when you are determining the position of something?

A

Latitude longitude on grid

Latitude - parallels
Longitude - meridians

360 meridians
180 parallels

Namibia’s latitude S of equators, latitude increase southwards in Nam.

Namibia’s longitude East of Greenwich, longitude increases eastwards.
