A
  • The connection to the first commandment is not explicit as it is in other commandments; however, marital fidelity is used throughout the OT to represent faithfulness to God.
  • Just as God expects his people to be faithful in their exclusive relationship with him, he also expects them to be faithful in their exclusive relationship in marriage.

Q

7th Commandment: Ethical Impact - Lust

A
  • Matthew 5:27–30
    1. “You have heard that it was said, ‘YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY’; but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. If your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell.”
  • In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus extends the meaning of the Seventh Commandment to lust.
  • Even though the man has not committed the physical act of adultery, his thoughts about the woman are equated to the action.
