Q

What is organic chemistry?

A

The branch of chemistry that studies the chemistry of carbon compounds is known as organic chemistry. This section focuses on crude oil as a source of carbon compounds and on compounds found in crude oil that are formed between carbon and hydrogen the hydrocarbons

Q

How does benzene differ from alkanes and alkanes?

A

Benzene’s are a type of hydrocarbon that forms in a loop with alternating double and single bonds. The electrons that make up double bonds are not in fixed positions they are delocalised.
Found in petroleum but found to increase risk of cancer

Q

What reaction do alkanes and alkenes go through?

A

Combustion - with excess oxygen, carbon dioxide and water is produced, but if there’s limited oxygen, carbon monoxide is produced.
