8 Organic Compounds Flashcards
(11 cards)
What are alkanes?
type of saturated hydrocarbons are composed of branched, unbranched and cyclic hydrocarbons.
What are Allene’s
type of unsaturated hydrocarbons are composed of branched, unbranched and cyclic hydrocarbons.
What is a fossil fuel?
Form from the remains of plants and animals
What is organic chemistry?
The branch of chemistry that studies the chemistry of carbon compounds is known as organic chemistry. This section focuses on crude oil as a source of carbon compounds and on compounds found in crude oil that are formed between carbon and hydrogen the hydrocarbons
What is a homologous series
A series of molecules in which each member differs by CH2 from the previous, is known as a homologous series
What are the different formulas in which you can write alkanes or alkenes?
Molecular formula, Lewis structure, diagram, condensed, structural formula and structural formula
Alkenes have a double bond in the structural formula
What are structural isomers of alkanes?
Molecules that have the same molecular formula but different arrangement of atoms
What is the alkenes general formula?
CnH2n
How does benzene differ from alkanes and alkanes?
Benzene’s are a type of hydrocarbon that forms in a loop with alternating double and single bonds. The electrons that make up double bonds are not in fixed positions they are delocalised.
Found in petroleum but found to increase risk of cancer
What are the different reactions of hydrocarbons?
Substitution reactions - where are carbon hydrogen bond is broken and replaced by a carbon halogen bond.
Addition reaction - atoms is added to a molecule
What reaction do alkanes and alkenes go through?
Combustion - with excess oxygen, carbon dioxide and water is produced, but if there’s limited oxygen, carbon monoxide is produced.
