ASA

A

Inhibits the formation of thromboxane A2 which is a potent platelet aggregate and vasoconstrictor

  • antiplatelet effects are IRREVERSIBLE - lasts for the life of platelets ~7-10 days

CONTRAINDICATIONs

ASA

A
  • HYPERSENSITIVITY (to ASA or other NSAIDs)
  • hx bronchospasm/other respiratory distress precipitated by ASA//NSAIDs
  • ACTIVE//recent bleeding of any kind - head injury, stroke, peptic ulcer disease
  • PEDIACTRICs presenting with viral symptoms consistent w/ REYS’S SYNDROME

Warnings // Precautions

ASA

A
  • should NOT be used in PEDIATRICs/young adults w/ - chicken pox, influenza, or ILI — RISK of developing REYE’s SYNDROME
  • ETOH use = increase RISK for GI bleeding

REYE’s SYNDROME - encephalopathy, acute liver damage
