Q

Child is throwing tantrum and head banging in your office, what is the next step

A

Take child to a different room away from others and allow him/her to calm down. Tantrums cannot be shortened or punished.

Up to 20% of typically developing children will bang their heads while having a tantrum, so you don’t always need to be concerned that it is a “red flag” for ASD.
