  • founder of modern nursing
  • had a wealthy family, not usually the type to get into nursing
  • took 3 weeks of school in germany
  • head of the hospital within a year
  • took 100 nurses to Crimean war to help soldiers dying from infections. She focused on changing the environments that they were cared for in and saved 2/3 of the soldiers.
  • queen awarded her money and she started her first nursing school
  • focused on nurses looking at the whole person/situation.

history of practical nursing

A
  • became a profession in 1930’s but wasn’t recognized as a distinct profession until the 1970’s.
  • before that you needed minimal high school preparation and the program was short and nothing official.
  • people were generally cared for in their home and only went to hospitals if they didn’t have family or if they were going to die.
  • poor conditions
  • nursing profession was disrespected and was often prostitutes
