Chapter 3 +PT Flashcards
How do you evaluate accuracy and precision?
To evaluate the accuracy, the measured value must be compared to the correct value.
To evaluate the precision, you must compare the values of two or more repeated measurements
What is the accepted value, experimental value, error, and percent error?
Accepted Value- a quantity used by general agreement of the scientific community
Experimental Value- a quantitative value measured during an experiment
Error- the difference between the accepted value and the experimental value (e - a)
Percent Error- error/accepted value x 100%
What determines the density of a substance?
Density is an intensive property that depends only on the composition of a substance, not the size of a sample.
What is dimensional analysis?
A technique of problem-solving that uses the units that are part of a measurement to help solve the problem
What is dimension analysis used for?
Solving conversion problems
What properties are extensive?
Mass and volume
What is hydrolysis used for
Separating compounds
What is the space an object takes up?
Volume
What are the 4 major stages of the scientific method?
Observing, formulating hypotheses, testing hypotheses, and theorizing
How can a mixture be separated?
Physical change
