Entropy Flashcards
A system becomes energetically more stable when it becomes more/loss disordered
More
What is entropy?
The measure ‘disorder’ of a system
Which is more entropic - solid or gas?
Gas
What happens to entropy when a solid lattice dissolves?
It increases
What happens when the number of gas particles decreases?
Entropy decreases
Change in S=
S(products) - S(reactants)
What determines the tendency of a process to take place?
The temperature
The entropy change
The enthalpy change
What is G, and what value does it take for a spontaneous reactions?
The free energy change of system, it must be negative for a spontaneous reaction to occur
How can endothermic reactions take place spontaneously?
ΔG is still negative
ΔS is also positive
TΔS is larger than ΔH, so ΔG is negative and the reaction proceeds spontaneously
What is the oxidation number?
The number of electrons an atom uses to bond to another element
