Define the STANDARD ELECTRODE POTENTIAL
The potential difference of a cell when the electrode is connected to the standard hydrogen electrode under standard conditions
Why do use platinum in standard hydrogen electrode?
You need an inert metal to get the electrons in/out without reacting
What is a salt bridge?
Paper or gelatin saturated in an ionic compound e.g. KNO3
Completes the circuit in a cell, when measuring the standard electrode potentials.
Allows ions to be transferred between the half cells. Does not react with either half cell solutions
The electropotential of a half cell indicates…
It’s tendency to lose or gain electrons
