Q

what is otosclerosis?

A

vascular spongy bone replaces normal lamellar bone of otic capsule origin particularly around the oval window which fixes the stapes footplate, restricts ossicular movement

Q

What is the treatment of otosclerosis?

A
  1. fenestration - old method
  2. Hearing aid
  3. Surgery to replace adherent stapes - stapedectomy
  4. fluoride - inhibit sclerotic progression
  5. cochlear implant if severe

Q

What investigations are done in presbycusis

A
  1. otoscopy - rule out otosclerosis, cholesteatoma + conductive hearing loss (foreign body, impacted wax)
  2. Tympanometry - normal middle ear function w hearing loss
  3. audiometry - bilateral sensorineural pattern hearing loss
  4. bloods - inflammatory markers and abs normal
