Q

Why can we get pale stool and dark urine in the picture of jaundice (e.g. intra-hepatic jaundice)?

A
  • Dark urine is caused by conjugated bilirubinaemia resulting in bilirubinuria
  • Pale stools result from reduced intestinal excretion of bilirubin and therefore reduced stercobilin formation
