Exam 3 Week 9 Objective & Covers Periodontal Disease Flashcards

1
Q

List and explain limitations of using radiographs for diagnosis of periodontal disease

A
  • 2D image of 3D structure
  • Does not show exact morphology of bone
  • Does not show disease activity
  • Never substitute for a clinical periodontal assessment
  • Does not show early bone loss or early furcation involvement
  • Does not show tooth mobility

Q

Describe the difference between horizontal and vertical bone loss

A

Vertical

  • Greater degree of bone loss on the interproximal aspect of one tooth compared to the adjacent tooth
  • May require surgical tx to try to regenerate bone

Horizontal Bone Loss

  • alveolar crest > 2mm from CEJ
  • Lamina Dura usually lost the well defined radiopaque edge
  • Hard to determine wether disease is active or stable
