Q

What is this?

A

Hives/Photosensitisation
This facial swelling Is not bluetongue
Blain also has this effect
Treat symptomatically – CS/AH (BEWARE if pregnant)
Photosensitisation – like severe sunburn cause sloughing. Can be associated with liver disease and plants e.g. st jons wart

Q

What are the signs of Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR)?

A
  • May be pyrexic to start with as they are coming “down with it”
  • Conjunctivitis: Hyperaemia and chemosis (oedema)

8
Q

What is the cause of Malignant Catarrhal Fever?

A

•Also herpes. Ovine herpes virus and the cow is the end host!

–Less group outbreaks

  • Presents as individual animals
  • The MCF viruses belong to the Rhadinovirus genus of the Gammaherpesvirinae subfamily of the Family Herpesviridae. The rhadinoviruses are lymphotropic herpesviruses that share a common genome structure and are consistently associated with lymphoproliferation.

Q

What is the cause of “New Forest Disease” IBK
Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis?

A
  • Bacterial
  • Moraxella bovis “New Forest Eye”
  • Gram-negative, aerobic bacterium
  • Found in the eyes of many recovered and apparently normal cattle
  • Bacteria will attack cornea under circumstances!
  • Associated with animals at pasture ad transmission by flies!
  • Summer outbreak disease
  • Initially might just be a small ulcer

12
Q

How can we treat new forest disease?

A

–Topical Cloxacillin ointment

–Tetracycline (advisable as often 2º mycoplasma spp)

–Bulbar conjunctival injection

–NSAIDs

–No topical steroids (ulceration risk)

–Suture eyelids (pain control and reduces risk of perforation)

17
Q

How do treat silage eye?

A

–Steroids of some form

–Not AB – If you know it is

–Inject under bulba conjunctiva rather than having to put in drops.

•Unknown if it dribbles out to work or if it gets in further

18
Q

Name nervous diseases of young stock/calves?

A

•Listeriosis

–Individual animas and unilateral facial paralysis (eyelids not functioning)

•CCN (cerebrocortical necrosis)

–Thiamine deficient – multi focal abscess in brain

•Meningitis

–Severe listeria

  • Lead poisoning
  • Tetanus
