Q

China’s one-child policy is part of a birth planning program. Its aims to control the population size of China.
In 1980, the Chinese government began to implement the one-child policy, thus restricting the vast majority of Chinese families to have only one child. At that time, the Chinese government found that the population growth rate was too fast, so it decided to implement this policy.

In terms of advantages, first, it is good for the family’s economy. The one-child policy helps children get more educational opportunities, because the whole family only needs to pay for the education of one child. Second, this policy also helps Chinese women to change their social roles. Compared with the past, girls have more opportunities to participate in various school projects and enjoy a higher quality of life. Third, the one-child policy has also brought more job opportunities, because the population growth rate is no longer as exaggerated as before, so the employment competition pressure will be less, and people will find jobs more easily.

However, the one-child policy also has some disadvantages. First, children born under this policy no longer have siblings. In the process of their growth, they may encounter some problems, such as loneliness, anxiety and even suffering, which they can only bear alone. Secondly, the one-child policy will also lead to an unbalanced sex ratio, because many families will check the sex of their children before they are born. If they are boys, they will keep and if they are girls, they will abort. Therefore, by 2020, the sex ratio between men and women in China will reach 117: 100, which means that there will be 30 million more men than women in Chinese society. In order to solve this problem, people must change the concept of son preference and reject sex selection.

For a family, the 421 structure (four old people, two young people and one child) really puts too much pressure on young people. As only children, they have to take care of both parents and even grandparents at the same time, which is really beyond their means. Fortunately, China has now abolished the one-child policy and replaced it with the universal two-child policy: the government strongly encourages young couples to have two children.

Generally speaking, I think the one-child policy is very effective to some extent. By prohibiting over-births, this policy has helped China to control the population growth. However, I do not like the consequences of this policy. For example, fines and other penalties for over birth. If parents already have a child, they have to choose abortion, adoption or even killing the child already born! Britain also implements a two-child policy, but it is not as strict as China.
