Why do Aircraft have letters and numbers preceding their name?

A

Aircraft Reporting Names have a letter to indicate its role which proceeds the variant type.

E.g. Hawk T2

Hawk is the aircraft.

T indicates that it is a trainer.

2 indicates that it is Mark 2 (the newer updated version).

Why did we replace the Tutor with the Prefect?

A

The Prefect brings turboprop power, digital avionics and retractable undercarriage to elementary flying training, making it relevant to the next stage of training (Juno, Texan, Phenom).

It will eliminate the need for students to learn glass cockpit flying later in training and establish a digital precedent all the way to the frontline.
