What is Nigeria’s population like?
– In 2013 population was 175 million.
- It is only 3% of Africa’s territory, but it’s home to 15% of its people.
- 40% of children between the ages of 6 - 11 don’t attend primary school.
- There can be up to 100 children per class in some schools.
- In Lagos, people commonly live in slums or in one room apartments to house entire families
What are some of the issues due to its over population?
– Pressure on resources: over population means there is a strain on natural resources e.g. land and oil, because they’re being used up too quickly.
- Lack of essential services: not enough services e.g. hospitals and schools
- In adequate sanitation: services like waste removal are insufficient, meaning outbreaks of disease will happen.
Where is there a lack of housing?
In Kano, as a result of over population, there isn’t enough space to accommodate that many people.
Where is there air and water pollution?
In Port Harcourt, because lack of waste removal services lead for the trash to end up in the water.
Where are their food and water shortages?
In Yola, as an affect of the pressure on natural resources and deforestation, which may lead to famine.
Where is there a lack of health care and education?
In Ibadan, due to over population, there aren’t enough services provided to the people, so they can’t be educated or mediaclly cared for. This may lead to spread and diseases.
Where are the roads congested?
In Lagos, Because there are too many vehicles on the road at the same time. This leads to air pollution and a higher number of car accidents.
