Circulatory System Flashcards
3 main components in the circulatory system
Blood
blood vessels
Heart
How much blood is in an adult
5.5litres
What is blood made up of
Plasma
Red blood cells
White blood cells
Platelets
How is a red Blood cell adapted to carrying oxygen
Contains haemoglobin No nucleus Bi-concave shape Large surface area compared The average red blood cell is slightly larger than a capillary so it is forced to slow down
3 types of blood cell in plasma
Red blood cell
White blood cell
Platelets
What happens red blood cells in a high concentration of water
They will lyse
What do capillaries do
Link arteries to veins
Gas exchange
2 Parts to double circulatory system
Systemic and pulmonary
What is cardiac output
The amount of bloood pumped by the heart per minute
What are the 4 chambers of the heart
Right atrium
Left atrium
Right ventricle
Left ventricle
2 sets of valves and What They do
Atrioventricular valves- prevent black flow of blood between the ventricles and atrium
Semi-lunar valves- prevent back flow of blood into the ventricles
Symptoms of anemia 4
Tiredness- lack of energy
Shortness of breath
Noticeable heartbeats (heart palpitations)
Pale skin
