Chapter 1 Flashcards
Prefrontal Cortex
The cerebral cortex covering the front part of the frontal lobe. This brain region has been implicated planning complex cognitive behavior, personality expression, decision making, and moderating social behavior.
sensory neurons
Nerve cells within the nervous system responsible for converting external stimuli from organisms environment to internal electrical impulses.
Motor Neurons
efferent neurons that originate in the spinal cord and synapse with muscle fibers to facilitate muscle. contraction and with muscles spindles to modify proprioceptive sensitivity.
Interneurons
Transmits impulses between other neurons, especially as part of a reflex arc
The Spinal Cord
located in the vertebral foramen and is made up of 31 segments: 8 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumber, 5 sacral, and 1 coccygeal.
The cerebellum
Located behind the top part of the brain stem. Receives information from the. sensory. systems, the spinal cord, and other parts of the brains and then regulates motor movements.
White matter
The tissue through which messages pass between different areas of gray matter within the CNS
Gray matter
Consists of neuronal cell bodies, neuropil, glial cells, synapses, and capillaries
Dendrite
A short branched extension of a nerve cell, along which impulses received from other cells at synapses are transmitted to the cell body.
Axons
The long threadlike part of a nerve cell along which impulses are conducted from the cell body to other cells
