Q

What type of tissue is this? Also:

  • Type of epithelium
  • Surface speciaization (if any)
  • Function of this structure?
A
  • Efferent ductules
  • Pseudostratified epithelium that is clumps of tall and short columnar cells that give apical membrane a “wavy” appearance
  • Taller cells = ciliated, shorter contain microvilli, canalicular invaginations, vesicles, lysosomes, etc.
  • Most of the fluid secreted by seminiferous tubules is reabsorbed in efferent ductules –> draws fluid and sperm out of testis

Q
  • What type of tissue is this?
  • Describe epithelium
  • What 2 cell populations are seen?
  • What is the most striking feature?
A
  • Epididymis
  • Tall, pseudostratified columnar epithelium
  • Cells
    • Principal –> numerous long stereocilia extending into lumen
    • Basal –> small round at basal lamina that are stem cells for duct epithelium
  • Principal cells have large apical golgi apparatus –> lighter staining

16
Q
  • What tissue is shown?
  • Key striking feature of this tissue?
  • Describe epithelium
  • Describe secretions and function.
A
  • Seminal vesicle
  • Highly folded, tubular gland with numerous elaborate folds that increase secretory surface area
  • Pseudostratified, non-ciliated epithelium, protein secreting cells with well developed rough ER and lots of secretory vesicles in cytoplasm
  • Whitish yellow contains fructose as metabolic substance for sperm
17
Q
  • What tissue is shown?
  • What is the epithelium like?
  • What is the key striking feature of this tissue?
A
  • Prostate gland (note: fibromuscular stroma occupies most of anterior surface of prostate, dense CT and smooth muscle)
  • Simple columnar with some areas of cuboidal or pseudostratified epithelium
  • Concretions - lamellated bodies that consist of calcified precipitate

The penile urethra passes through the […]

A

Corpus spongiosum

20
Q

The […] binds the corpus cavernosi and the corpus spongiosum together. (in the penis)

31
Q

Describe the lining of the external cervix and the cervical canal.

A

The external surface of the cervix is covered with stratified squamous epithelium while the cervical canal is lined with simple columnar epithelium. The transition between these 2 is abrupt.
