Science Unit 4.1 to 4.8 Flashcards
What is mass?
Mass is the amount of matter in an object.
What units are used to measure mass?
Grams (g) and Kilograms (Kg).
Are mass and weight the same?
No the aren’t the same.
What is weight?
Weight is the amount of attraction or force on an object caused by gravity.
What is the unit for measuring weight?
The unit used is newton or N for short.
Who are newtons named after?
They are named after Sir Isaac Newton, a scientist who lived in England about 400 years ago. He was the first person to explain what forces are.
How much force does 1 kg of mass have?
It has a force of ten newtons on Earth.
How can forces act?
They can act in different directions. They also act in pairs.
When forces are unbalanced and one force is greater than the other, there is a _____ force.
When forces are unbalanced and one force is greater than the other, there is a |-net-| force.
The longer the arrow…
The bigger the force.
The shorter the arrow…
The smaller the force.
When forces are balanced…
There is no net force.
Can we see forces? How do we know force is there?
We can’t see forces but we can feel or see what they do.
What can forces do?
They can make things move. They can also speed up or even slow down objects as well as make them stop.
Forces that change the movement or shape of an object are called ___
Unbalanced forces.
