A
  • The body’s immune system attacks the insulin producing cells of the pancreas
  • Cannot produce insulin and require lifelong insulin injections for survival
  • Occurs at any age, although it mostly occurs in children and young adults

  • Excessive thirst and dehydration
  • Frequent urination
  • Hunger, accompanied by weight loss
  • Blurred vision

Describe the oral signs and symptoms of diabetes (9)

  • Candidiasis
  • Caries
  • Xerostomia
  • Infection
  • Burning mouth syndrome
  • Impaired wound healing
  • Increased glucose in saliva
  • Dysgeusia
  • Diabetes is a risk factor for periodontitis and periodontitis has a negative effect on glycaemic control

Describe the overall dental management of diabetes

A
  • Check BGL: before meal should be 4-6 mmol, 2 hrs after should be 4- 8 mmol
  • Consult with CE if 10 mml, retake again
  • Cancel if above 14 mmol
  • Hypoglycaemic attack: place glucose gel under tongue
