Why the introduction of neurocirculatory asthenia (NCA)?
They [US military] disapproved of effort syndrome because of the implication that its symptoms were simply an exaggeration of the normal response to physical exertion. Neurocirculatory asthenia was chosen ‘because it was descriptive, noncommittal as regards to the heart, and shortened to the cryptic “NCA”’ (Oppenheimer, 1942, p. 368).

What is the relationship between NYDN and NYDN centers?
regimental medical officers were not to use the term shell shock when evacuating men from the front. They were to be designated NYDN for specialist assessment at one of the four ‘NYDN centres’ established in forward positions. These were the first forward psychiatric treatment units set up by the British army and had been opened in December 1916 as a result of the manpower crisis which followed the Somme offensive. NYDN (not yet diagnosed, neuropsychiatric) centres were set up by the RAF during World War Two to assess and treat aircrew who had lost the confidence of their commanding officers and who were suspected of exhibiting lack of moral fibre.
