Q

Epithelial tissue (epithelium)
Main functions:
- covering body surfaces; and
- lining body cavities and tubes

A
Connective tissue (CT)
Main functions:
- binding and supporting other tissues
- protecting other tissues
- insulating other tissues
- storing energy reserves (fuel)
- transporting substances within the body

Q

Neural tissue
Main function:
- carries electrochemical signals from one part of the body to another,
I.e internal communication

A
Muscle tissue
Main function:
- contracts to cause movement
- three categories
1. Skeletal muscle
2. Heart muscle
3. Smooth muscle in the walls of hollow organs

Q

Classes of epithelia
Based on cells and layers:
Simple - one layer
Stratified - several layers, two or more

Squamous - wide/thin, squash, suit ed to diffusion
Cuboidal - cubes with round corners, as tall as is wide
Columnar - rectangle shape, taller then wide

A

Simple squamous epithelium
Found: abdominal cavities, lining of lungs (good for diffusion), inside of blood vessels

Stratified squamous epithelium
Found: surface of skin, lining of mouth, throat, rectum, anus, vagina
- Wear and tear areas
- ,any layers, wipe a few off before reaching blood
Function: protection

Q

Simple cuboidal epithelium
Found: glands; ducts, portions of kidney, found in places of secrete or absorb
Function: limited protection

Stratified cuboidal epithelium
Found: lining of some ducts, mammary glands
Function: protection, secretion, absorption

Transitional epithelium
Found: urinary tract, renal pelvis, ureters
Function: permits eansion & recoil after stretching

A

Simple columnar epithelium
Found: small and large intestines, lining of stomach
Function: protection, secretion, absorption

Q

Characteristics of epithelia

  1. Avascularity
  2. Regeneration
  3. Polarity (apical and basal surfaces)
  4. Attachment (basal lamina)
A

Functions of epithelial tissue

  1. Provide physical protection
  2. Control permeability
  3. Provide sensation
  4. Produce specialised secretions (glandular epithelium)
