French settlement in Quebec and Montreal

A

The King of France in 1600s wanted to set up colonies in New France and as a result he granted trading companies (monopolies) the right to make as much profit as they wished. The company was The Company of 100 Associates. They were granted the monopoly provided they populated New France failed to do this

A

The main reason the company of 100 associates did not want to establish new colonies and populate New France was because the settlers would clear the land and the fur-bearing animals would run away making it difficult to hunt.

Fur trading posts in Montreal and Quebec

A

Tadoussac : Was the first fur-trading post in all of New France and it failed because of its location. (1600)

Quebec : The area was successful and became the first permanent settlement in 1608

Trois Rivieres : Also became successful as a fur trading post in 1634

Montreal: Became successful and a result
Montreal was established in 1642

Conflicts with fur-Traders and Missionaries

A

There were conflicts with each other as the fur-traders were only interested in money and the missionaries were interested in converting the Natives to the catholic faith and not interest in money

Fur-Trade Alliances

Hurons sided with the French
Iroquois sided with the English (Iroquois)
Both the Iroquois and the Huron would trade the furs with either the English or French for European goods such as pots,pans, woolens , guns and alcohol

The French Regime (1608-1760)

A

A chance of policy :

In 1608 Samuel de Champlain founded the 1st permanent settlement in Quebec.

The colony of New France belonged to the King of France and he granted monopoly to fur-trading companies so they could exploit the furs in exchange for establishing permanent settlements in New France.
