what are the advantages of field research?

A

23
Q

what are the methods of field research?

A
  • questionnaires/ surveys
  • personal interview
  • hall tests
  • focus groups
24
Q

what does questionnaire/surveys involve?

A

Involves asking people their opinion or their feedback through a series of questions

25
Q

what are the advantages to questionnaires?

A
  • Relatively inexpensive method

- People in large geographical area can be targeted

26
Q

what are the disadvantages to questionnaires?

A
  • Not always a high response level (phone/post)

- Clarification cannot always be gained so questions may be skipped

27
Q

what does personal interview involve?

A

When people meet face-to-face and several questions will be asked. Usually between a manager and a potential employee. The information that is gathered will allow the manager to determine if the person is suited to the job

28
Q

what are the advantages of personal interviews?

A
  • Clarification can happen if questions are not understood.

- Information is obtained instantly

29
Q

what are the disadvantages of personal interviews?

A
  • Time-consuming method and expensive as interviewers need to be paid.
  • Analysis will need to be done manually and can take a long time.
30
Q

what does hall tests involve?

A

Involves a product being given to consumers to test out them. Then give feedback and their opinion on the product. Based on this, changes may need to be made before is it released.

31
Q

what are the advantages of hall tests?

A
  • Diverse group can be asked.

- First-hand information.

32
Q

what are the disadvantages of hall tests?

A
  • People may feel they need to give positive feedback.

- Can be expensive to make changes to the product.

33
Q

what does focus groups involve?

A

When a group of people are asked for their views on a product/topic and a discussion will be generated. Used to observe people’s reactions and feelings towards something.

34
Q

what are the advantages of focus groups?

A
  • First-hand information is gathered.

- Lots of opinions will be gathered.

35
Q

what are the disadvantages of focus groups?

A
  1. People may feel they can’t disagree so false information can be gathered.
36
Q

what are the characteristics of quality information?

A
  • timely
  • accurate
  • appropriate
  • available
  • complete
  • concise
  • cost effective
  • objective
37
Q

Characteristics of quality information

timely…?

A

information must be available when needed and quick to gather. Information must be up to date

38
Q

Characteristics of quality information

accurate…?

A

information must be correct

39
Q

Characteristics of quality information

appropriate…?

A

information should be for the purpose required

40
Q

Characteristics of quality information

available…?

A

easy to find and easily obtained

41
Q

Characteristics of quality information

complete…?

A

nothing should be missing

42
Q

Characteristics of quality information

concise…?

A

short and to the point

43
Q

Characteristics of quality information

cost effective…?

A

value gained from information must be greater than the cost obtaining it

44
Q

Characteristics of quality information

objective…?

A

free from bias

45
Q

what are the uses of market research?

A
  • descriptive
  • predictive
  • explanatory
  • exploratory
46
Q

what does descriptive do?

A

to help identify what’s happening in markets

47
Q

what does predictive do?

A

help predict what is likely to happen within markets in the future

48
Q

what does explanatory do?

A

help explain certain factors that have already occurred in markets

49
Q

what does exploratory do?

A

help investigate new possibilities

50
Q

what is sampling?

A

When carrying out field research different ‘samples’ of the population is asked.
These ‘samples’ of people can be decided through either random sampling or quota sampling.
The larger the sample the more reliable the response will be.

51
Q

what are the two types of sampling?

A
  • random

- quota

52
Q

what is random sampling?

A

involves randomly selecting people from a list

individuals are then asked to take part in a method of field research

53
Q

what are the advantages of random sampling?

A
  • No chance of bias as it is a random group.

- Many opinions and views can be gathered.

54
Q

what are the disadvantages of random sampling?

A
  • Group is made up of all different target markets: unfocused
  • Does not take into consideration the person differences e.g. age – do they know anything about the topic being asked.
55
Q

what is quota sampling?

A

This method of sampling is where people are selected based on certain characteristics: age, gender, occupation etc.
This interviewer selects a group of people who meet the needed characteristics.

56
Q

what are the advantages of quota sampling?

A
  • Less expensive to carry out with random sampling as fewer resources are needed.
  • Results will be focused as the group is specific to the need.
57
Q

what are the disadvantages of quota sampling?

A
  • May have bias results as group has been specifically selected, will not be representative of whole population.
  • As all members of group have the same characteristics, they may all have the same views and opinion which will not give the business a wide variety of information.
