How population growth is determined from birth, death, immigration, and emigration
Population growth is determined by the balance of births and deaths (natural increase/decrease) and immigration and emigration (migration), with births and immigration increasing population size and deaths and emigration decreasing it.
How to sketch basic graphs showing exponential and logistic growth
To sketch graphs of exponential and logistic growth, remember that exponential growth shows a J-shaped curve, while logistic growth shows an S-shaped curve, leveling off at a carrying capacity
Where population growth is highest in exponential and logistic growth
In exponential growth, population growth is highest at the beginning, with the growth rate accelerating as the population size increases. In contrast, in logistic growth, the highest growth rate occurs in the middle of the curve, before the population reaches its carrying capacity, and then slows down as the population nears its limit.
What the variables N, N0, r, t, K, dN/dt stand for in the growth models
In population growth models, N represents the population size, Nā is the initial population size, r is the per capita growth rate, t is time, K is the carrying capacity, and dN/dt is the rate of change in population size over time.
