What are sound waves?
Longitudinal waves caused by vibrating objects
What are the vibrations passed through?
The surrounding medium as a series of compressions
What may the sound eventually reach?
Someone’s eardrum, at which point the person might hear it
What is a human ear capable of hearing frequencies of?
Between 20Hz and 20,000 Hz
What does it mean because sound waves are caused by vibrating particles?
In general the denser the medium, the faster sound travels through it
What do sounds wave generally travel faster in?
Solids rather than in liquids, and faster in liquids than in gases
What will sound waves be reflected by?
Hard flat surfaces
What do things like carpets and curtains act act as?
Absorbing surfaces, which will absorb sounds rather than deflect them
What will sound waves also do as they enter different media?
Refract (change direction)
What do sound waves do as they enter denser material?
They speed up
