Exam II: Mediastinum Flashcards
Superior mediastinum:
t1-4
Inferior border is an imaginary line between the sternal angle to t4
Inferior mediastinum
t5-12
The inferior mediastinum has several divisions:
anterior media.
Middle media. (heart and pericardium)
posterior media: pericardium and the vertbera.
Where is the thymus located in children?
in the superior mediastinum. posterior to the manubrium.
Describe the shape of the thymus in childhood development:
large and then after puberty it decreases in size and is replaced with fatty tissue.
blood supply is from the internal thoracic artery.
Hemiazygous veins
the posterior right intercostal arteries drain into the hemiazygous and travel up to the superior vena cava
Accessory hemi-Azygous
intercostals from t4-t7 will form this and drain into the azygous
hemiazygous
will also drain the inferior parts into the azygous which goes into the svc.
Pulmonary trunk
leaves the right ventricle and will run up in front of the arch of the aorta, then medially and then bifurcates posteriorly into right and left pulmonary arteries.
What is the first minor branch of the aorta:
the L/R coronary arteries.
What are some results of injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve.
symptoms that mimic respiratory allergies or sickness. However this is not an allerigc reaction or sickness, but rather a nerve impengement.
What is the ligamentum arteriosum?
fibrous remnant of the ductus arteriosus. That was a fetal bv that connected the left pulmonary artery to the descending aorta.
What is the thoracic duct??
the largest lymphatic channel in the body.
Where does the thoracic duct originate?
cisterna chyli
How does the thoracic duct run?
posteriorly and into the supeior mediastinum.
Where does the thoracic duct drain??
the union of the left internal jugular and subclavian veins.
