Q

In the 50s

A

Israel built a pipeline to pump water out of the Sea of Galilee, stopping the flow into the Jordan. Jordan then constructed a canal in the 70s to divert water out of the Yarmouk River, a main tributary, to water its farmland.

Q

How is Israel going to supply the water?

A

This will be supplied by diverting water, building new dams and desalinization. Other possibilities include using the Litani and Awali Rivers in Lebanon, cutting back n agriculture, and creating a regional water market whereby people pay for the water provided by the mountain aquifer.

Mountain Aquifer

A

Israel has obtained up to 80% of the 670 cubic meters provided by the mountain aquifer for decades. The Israelis have occupied the West Bank since 1967 and have prevented the Palestinians from obtaining better access to the resource.
