The ozone hole Flashcards
In the 1920s
Synthetic compounds known as CFCs were developed as refrigerants.
CFCs are
Essentially non toxic and non reactive and were ideal for use in fridges and cooling equipment,. They also proved a good propellant for aerosol spray cans.
CFC consequences
Affordable fridges, which offered better food, vaccine and medicine storage, the beehive hairstyles and improved personal hygiene and the spread of graffiti.
Early 1970s
There was growing concern that CFCs were depleting stratospheric ozone.
In 1976
They were banned in the USA
In 1985
British scientists discovered to ozone hole in the stratosphere above Antarctica.
Montreal Protocol
Of 1987 phased out the use of ozone depleting CFCs.
