Q

similarities and differences between mediation and moderation

A
Similarities:
a. In their most simplest form
    mediation and moderations
    both involves three
    variables.
b. Both mediation and
    moderations can be done
    with a regression analysis.
c. Both mediation and
    moderation look at the
impact of a third variable on
    a 2-varaibles relationship
    (IV-DV).
Differences:
a. Moderation involves an
    interaction term.
b. Moderation does not
    identify causality (i.e. not a
    causal model)
c. IV and ModV do not have to
be correlated in order to find
   a significant moderation.
d. Graphing is essential in a
    moderation analysis.

Q

Mediation is about the

A

Mediation is about the mechanism between the IV-DV (HOW)

• We use mediation analysis to
  identify one possible
  mechanism through which
  the IV predicts the DV.
• We are not comparing
  subgroups within the data in
  a mediation analysis.
• Finding mediations are
  common i.e. 60-80% of the
  time with social variables
  (rather than cognitive
  variables).

Q

Moderation is about …

A

Moderation is about (WHO) do subgroups differ in the strength of the IV-DV relationship?
• Moderations are rare to find,
only 10-15% of the time but
they are very illuminating.
