9.3 - Meiosis Flashcards
(4 cards)
1
Q
Process of meiosis diagram
A
2
Q
What is crossing over?
A
the process in which a chromatid breaks during meiosis and rejoins to the chromatid of its homologous chromosome so that its alleles are exchanged
3
Q
What is independent assortment?
A
- the alleles of two or more different genes get sorted into gametes independently of one another
- the allele a gamete received for one gene dosn’t influence the allele received for another gene
* homologous chromosomes line up in random orientations at the middle of the cell at metaphase as they separate - can produce different combinations of chromosomes in daughter cells
4
Q
What does meiosis produce? Why is this the case?
A
daughter cells which are genetically different from each other to the parent cell
* this is due to indpendent assortment and crossing over
