9.3 Newton's Laws Flashcards
(14 cards)
Who realized that objects stop due to friction?
Galileo Galilei
What is Newton’s First Law
Objects at rest stay at rest and objects in motion stay in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
Law of Inertia
What is Newton’s Second Law?
Force = Mass x Acceleration
F=ma
What is Newton’s Third Law?
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction
Regarding the First Law, what stays the same if the object isn’t acted upon?
Speed and direction
Define inertia
The tendency to resist any change in motion.
What happens when forces aren’t equal and opposite?
The forces are unbalanced, and the motion of the object changes.
What are the traits of a standard free body diagram?
- Up arrow is F support
- The direction of the force is F applied
- The opposite direction to the applied is F friction
- Down arrow is F weight
- Length of an arrow indicates the size of the force
What are the traits of a rising object free body diagram?
- No arrows left and right
- Up arrow is applied
- Down arrow is still weight
What are the traits of a falling free body diagram?
- Upwards arrow is F support (air resistance)
- Down arrow is weight
What happens when an unbalanced force is applied?
An object will accelerate in the direction the unbalanced force
How do you change the amount of acceleration an object has?
Change the mass/force
What is net force?
The force + direction an object will move
Regarding Newton’s Third Law, if you catch a ball, what happens?
The ball hits your hands, but your hands push back with an equal and opposite force, meaning it slows and stops.
