Q

Name nine adaptations to the leaf and how they benefit photosynthesis

A

Large SA to absorb as might light as possible
Arrangement of leaves minimises overlapping to prevent shadowing
Membrane contains all the enzymes required for the light dependent reaction
Thin so diffusion distance is short
Transparent cuticle + epidermis
Long narrow upper Mesophyll packed w/ chlorophyll
Numerous stomata 4 gas exchange
Stomata that open and close in response 2 changes in LI
Network of Xylem and Phloem

Q

Describe the Light Dependent Reaction

A

Chlorophyll absorbs light energy and pair of electrons raised to a higher energy level= Photoionisation .
Photolysis of water increases hydrogen ion con. as well as them being pumped in via proton pump. The protons only exit via ATP synthase to create ATP and the hydrogens reduce NADP

Q

Describe the light independent reaction.

A

CO2 diffuses into stomata and dissolves in H2O
Ribulose Bisphosphate + CO2= Glycerate 3-phosphate. Catalysed by Rubisco

Then this is turned into Triose-Phosphate after reduced NADP becomes NADP and goes back to LDR and ATP hydrolysis into ADP and Pi.

Triose Phosphate can either be turned into organic substance like glucose or recombine to make Ribulose Bisphosphate
