Q

What happens during infant baptism

A

During infant baptism there is a lot of symbolism used to reinforce the meaning of what is happening.

In the CofE and Roman Catholic Church infant baptism involves the child having water from the font poured over their head.

In the Orthodox Church the child is immersed in water in the baptismal bowl or font. This is to represent leaving behind the life of sin and entering a Christian life. The priest says the child’s name and baptises it in the name of the father son and Holy Spirit

Water symbolises being cleansed of original sin and the beginning of new life.

Roman Catholics also run blessed oil (chrism) onto the child’s head to symbolise the coming of the Holy Spirit.

What is confirmation ?

A

Children who have been baptised as babies need to make their own choice about belonging to the Christian faith

It is an opportunity for a young person to confirm their faith

During this service they will answer for themselves the questions their parents answered for their behalf during infant baptism
