  • Dose of radiation (1 CT head = 100 chest x-rays)
  • Limited anatomical detail – axial plane but now volume data
  • Requires iodinated contrast media – potential for allergic reaction

  • Better that MRI for demonstrating bone & calcification

* Quicker scan times than MRI

  • Contrast injection may be required
  • Strong magnetic field – in some patients MRI is contraindicated
  • Noisy & claustrophobic
  • Longer scan times than CT
