Potemkin Mutiny (June 1905)

A

The sailors complained about their meat having maggots. Ship’s doctor claimed that the meat was acceptable. Officers threatened to shoot soldiers who refused to eat the meat. A soldier was shot and the sailors rebelled. They killed an officer and took control of the ship. Mutineers sailed to Odessa, where strikes and protests took place for several weeks. There was overwhelming amount of support towards the sailors.

Underlying context of the Potemkin Mutiny

A

The navy faced tough discipline and harsh conditions., some sailors believed that it was unfair that the Russian officers to have full control due to their class and wealth. The Navy suffered from poor confidence due to the loss in the Battle Of Tsushima in 1905.

Peasant Riots

A

On the countryside, peasants rioted against their landlords by burning manor houses, killing landlords and their family. Police had difficulty dealing with the mutiny.

Industrial Workers

A

Many strikes took place for workers to achieve their aims. Bloody Sunday increased the number of strikes - more than 4000,000 workers went in strike on January. General Strike organized from 20th September to 2nd October in 1905

Events of the General Strike (20th September to 2nd October)

A

This paralyzed Russia’s important industries including the railway. Without railways, Russia would not function. The general strike linked the workers with the middle classes, who wanted reform. The general strike then became a national strike against the government.

Saint Petersburg Soviet

A

A council of workers set up in October 1905 that helped to organize the general strike. Other soviets were set up in other cities. Lasted only from September to Early December. This idea of a worker’s soviet became important in 1917.
