How does the 40mm HEDP M430A1 work?

A
  • The weapon firing pin strikes the primer.
  • The discharge from the primer ignites the propellant charge contained within the propellant cup.
  • Gas pressure generated by the burning propellant ruptures the propellant cup.
  • Gas enters the low pressure chamber.
  • The gas pressure in the low pressure chamber acts upon the base of the projectile forcing the projectile from the cartridge case.
  • The rotating band around the projectile engages the rifling in the launcher tube imparting a spin of 12,000 rpm to the projectile at a velocity of 241ms.
  • Prior to firing, the detonator in the fuze rotor is held out of line by the position of the setback pin against the rotor and gear assembly.
  • Upon firing, setback force frees the rotor from the pin.
  • The spin of the projectile causes the safety spring assembly to disengage from the rotor and gear assembly.
  • The detonator then begins to move toward the armed position under the influence of centrifugal force on the eccentrically located rotor.
  • The movement of the rotor and gear assembly is resisted by an escapement mechanism, providing the required time delay in the arming of the fuze.
  • The detonator reaches the armed position when the projectile has travelled a distance of 18 to 40 meters from the launcher.
  • Upon impact with the target, the firing pin is driven into the detonator.
  • The effect of the detonator initiates the spitback charge producing a jet which in turn initiates the main charge.
  • Detonation of the main charge provides both the armour piercing effect of the shaped charge and fragmentation of the steel body.

Operation of M433?

A
  • The weapon firing pin strikes the primer.
  • The discharge from the primer ignites the propellant chargecontained within the propellant cup.
  • Gas pressure generated by the burning propellant ruptures the propellant cup.
  • Gas enters the low pressure chamber.
  • The gas pressure in the low pressure chamber acts upon the base of the projectileforcing the projectile from the cartridge case.
  • As the projectile moves towards the muzzle of the weapon the driving band engages the rifling in the launcherbarrel to impart a spin of 3750 rpm to the projectile to stabilise its flight and complete the arming process.
  • On firing, inertia causes the detent in the fuze assembly to set back, freeing the unbalanced rotor.
  • Simultaneously, the hammer weights set back against their retaining spring, raising the firing pin from its lockedposition in the rotor.
  • The rotor is free to turn under the influence of an assisting spring and centrifugal force.
  • The centrifugal force generated by the spin of the projectile releases a centrifugal lock from the escapementmechanism.
  • This allows the rotor to move the detonator in line with the firing pin.
  • The time required for theescapement mechanism to align the detonator with the firing pin ensures the projectile is not armed until it is 14 to 27metres from the muzzle of the launcher.
  • When fully armed the rotor is locked by centrifugal force.
  • On direct impact the firing pin is driven rearwards initiating the M55 detonator.
  • When the M55 detonator is initiated the spit-back shaped charge is triggered, producing a jet blast that detonates the high explosive shaped charge.
  • Detonation of the shaped charge forms an armour piercing jet of metal and fragmentation of the projectile body.
