why did china enforce a one child policy?
- china is overcrowded / rapidly growing population
- strain on resources
- smaller population would help economy
- allows for better investment in education

- people would be fined

- can only register one child
- loss of job
what are the incentives for couples?
if parents have one child certificate they get rewards such as
- cash bonuses
- better education
- health care
- child care
- extra maternity leave

what was the fertility rate, and what is it now?
Fertility rate when from 6.7 to 1.6
- below replacement level
why is there a preference for boys?
- think they will bring in more money
- don’t have to deal with troubles girls have
- traditional thinking etc.
because there is a preference for boys what is happening?
- ratio of girls and boys is 100:120
- too many boys so there will not be enough women
- girls and women empowerment is encouraged
what is happening because women empowerment is encouraged?
- women are starting to not want to marry and have kids
= this means that the ratio of girls and boys is even more uneven.
what is happening to women’s rights because of the one-child policy?
women’s rights are being violated because they can be forced into having abortions
what is happening to the rural/farming parts of china?
- in rural china they have children so they can help and work on the farm, now they can only have one child which puts them at a disadvantage with money
