2
Q

Similarities between connective tissues

A

1). Common origin (mesenchyme, fluid/loose embryonic tissue)
2). Diff. degrees of vascularity/blood flow (e.g. cartilage = avascular)
3). Mostly composed of inert extracellular matrix

3
Q

What is the extracellular matrix composed of?

A

1). Ground substance- fills in spaces between cells
2). Fibers- provide support

Q

Types of fibers

A

1). Collagen- tough and flexible, part of the skin
2). Elastic fiber- long and thin, snap it back in place, found in blood vessel walls/skin
3). Reticular fiber- used to protect organs, “fuzzy nets”

Areolar

A

Proper loose connective tissue, most common, found under the epithelial tissue, wrapped around organs

Q

Adipose

A

Proper loose connective tissue, fat tissue, insulates, mostly cells which store lipids/energy for later use, surrounds organs & eyes

Q

Reticular

A

Proper loose connective tissue, “woven mess” of reticular fibers, framework of the spleen, holds blood & organs in place

Q

Dense elastic

A

allows for more elasticity, around joints, connecting your vertabrae so your spine can curve & twist

16
Q

Elastic cartilage

A

Loaded w/ collegen fibers, found in places where strength & stretchability are needed (larynx, ears, etc.)

17
Q

Fibrocartilage

A

shock absorbers, good at withstanding lots of pressure, vertebral discs and knee joints

18
Q

Draw areolar tissue

A

ground substance, elastic fibers (thin), collagen fibers (thick), fibroblasts (immature fiber cells)

19
Q

Draw adipose tissue

A

nucleus, adipocyte, cell membrane

20
Q

Draw reticular tissue

A

fibroblasts, reticular fibers, white blood cells

21
Q

Draw dense regular and irregular tissue

A

fibroblasts, collagen fibers, regular = strong in one direction, irregular = strength in all directions

22
Q

Draw hyaline cartilage

A

nucleus, lacuna, chondrocyte, extracellular matrix

23
Q

Draw elastic cartilage

A

extracellular matrix, nucleus, lacuna, chondrocyte, elastic fibers

24
Q

Draw fibrocartilage

A

chondrocyte, nucleus, collagen fiber, ground substance

25
Fibroblast
immature baby fiber cells, most common, produces fibers
26
Histiocytes
mature cells, macrophages (eats things) of connective tissue, protection
27
Leukocytes
mature white blood cells, reside in connective tissues, reacts against foreign matter
28
Plasma cells
produces antibodies
29
Mast cells
produces heparin (anticoagulant) & histimine (released during infection) *found near blood vessels*
30
Adipocytes
mature fat cells, found in adipose tissue
